REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How do these standards help teachers shape what students should know and be able to do?
  2. How can the standards be addressed with traditional activities such as reading a Shakespeare play, poem or novel?
  3. What is missing from current curricula?
  4. What needs to changed or be added to our current instructional approach?

Podcast On Your Plan ep30 with Adam Zodrow

IMG_20160205_084222433 (1)Adam Zodrow has been actively involved in every position possible in education. I like to think of him as an educational philosopher, but he’s not just full of theories. He can unravel big ideas into practical, manageable working parts in a way few people can. I can’t wait for you to hear some of his latest big ideas and how you can get involved. Follow Adam on Twitter at Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 11.53.48 AM@AdamZokc for more thought provoking conversations. Oh yeah, he’s also preparing for his next big education challenge: running for school board.

Podcast On Your Plan ep29 with NWOSU

Full Disclosure: my intro is a little long winded as I also include updates about the standards (currently being reviewed by the Legislators), so feel free to skip ahead 13 minutes for the real action!

Screen Shot 2016-02-08 at 5.20.16 PMI had the pleasure of visiting with future Oklahoma teachers currently studying at Northwestern OSU in Alva! Professor Jennifer Oswald (Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 11.53.48 AM@JenJenReaderO) allowed me to visit and discuss the new ELA standards with the faculty and students and then podcast with two outstanding future education leaders, Morgan Renbarger (Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 11.53.48 AM@MorganKylee10) and Mercedes Keys (Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 11.53.48 AM@maserati26_2). This is a great episode to share with other first year teachers or teachers in training and I always think it’s informative to know what’s on our future educators’ minds.

Podcast On Your Plan ep23 with Kenzie Pratt, Emily Chambers, and Kerry Friesen – #NCTE15 recap, day 5

Screen Shot 2015-11-23 at 9.28.55 PMMeet future NCTE keynote presenters – Kenzie Pratt (Screen Shot 2015-05-28 at 11.53.48 AM@savvybknerd), Emily Chambers, and Kerry Friesen!

Technically, NCTE 2015 is over, but #ALAN15 and #CEL15 are just beginning! I’m attending #CEL15 and they – Kenzie, Emily, and Kerry – are participating in #ALAN15 – which I’ve decided to describe as ComicCon for Young Adult Literature enthusiasts, without the costumes.

This episode was particularly fun because I enjoy working with new teachers. After getting to know each other and learning about ALAN, we get into some real talk about education, classroom challenges, and rewards. We also recap our individual highlights from ALAN and NCTE. Hilarity ensues and it was just a really fun episode for me to explore the various focuses of our educators. Oh, and we discuss the one essential book we would want to have with us should we ever get stranded on a deserted island with students and needed something to teach.
